Two Items:

- I went to the local (to work) barbershop a couple of weeks ago to get cleaned up for drill.  The place was packed (I was 4th for the one barber) so I walked up to the sub shop (the same one we used for the BWI "practice walk" before last fall's MS Walk) and ordered lunch.

On the way there, I noticed the hole in the wall Hallmark store still had holiday ornaments.  I ducked in and found the last of the Star Trek Reliant ornaments, which I was unable to find after not getting one at Christmas.  So I was able to pick it up at half price, which was a win.

- The big win, however, was [info]ancientsong putting her hammered dulcimer in my really long term care.  I don't know how to play it, but I have the book which has a teaching CD and DVD in it.  This could be difficult, as I wouldn't say I read music as much as decrypt it - a much slower process.  Still, the dulcimer has a great sound and it's a lot easier than fife, my other instrument.  We'll see what I can do with this opportunity.

Darkover XXXI AAR

But year by year, their numbers get fewer
Someday no one will march there at all

Darkover was a problematical con on many levels.  I had the girls, which makes doing much of anything difficult.  I know things will be better on that front in a couple of years but right now its stressful.

Second, I've been going to this con for many years - since the early 80's when I was still a new SCA dude.  Nowadays, it feels less like Darkover and more like Melnibone' - people are growing old and going away, but there's few replacements.  It's never been an event heavy con but it's tough to keep things going.  This year was the last costume competition.  They had only 4 entries, one of which was young fan (the dd's).  The centerpiece is still the Clam Chowder concert, which is fun but not the OMG screaming geek out it used to be.

The best part for me was Sun afternoon, when the dd's spent their time running with the other con urchins in the big main lobby.  They ran around while I sat and watched them through the strings of Ellen's J's celtic harp while she sang and played.  It helped to wind be down after a lot of flogging the dd's incessantly to get anything done.  Also, there were a few people who willing to give me hugs, back rubs, or just a shoulder to lean  against.

I paid for E and myself for another year, but I have no idea what could or should be done for this con.

Another iTunes Question

Since the vast majority of stuff I have in iTunes right now are from CD's, I don't have a lot of album artwork.  However, when I ask to download the artwork, I get a vaguely ominous warning along the lines of "information about songs with missing artwork will be sent to Apple - ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS?

Is this the last bit of intel the RIAA needs before they send some digital rights wetwork team to my house or what?

So, I have this iPod, a computer, and a pile of CD's.  Right now, I importing the ceremonial first CD (A Quiet Normal Life: The Best of Warren Zevon) onto the HD so I can put it on the iPod.

However, the current settings mean that the CD will take up about half a gig of space, giving me room for about 50 odd CD's on the iPod.  For the purposes of listening to music while driving and possibly walking, can I possibly set the songs to a less porcine setting without losing sound quality?  If so, to what?

Working from front to Bach

In what was probably my last big ticket impulse buy for awhile, I decided to get J.S. Bach on CD.

All of it.

The good news is it works out to a buck a CD.

However, there are 115 CD's.

I've started with disk I-1 and am about 6 disks in right now.  I probably need to get a CD holder to hold a dozen or so and swap in new ones as I work my way through them.  The original box is a little bulky and not very car friendly.

Here is a funny YouTube rant on the ubiquiness of Pachelbel's Canon in music today, courtesy of comedian/musician Rob Paravonian

That is, if the embed works - otherwise, use the first link above.

One month later they hit upon 'The Other Other Operation'. In this the victim was threatened that if he didn't pay them, they would beat him up. This for the Piranha brothers was the turning point.  - The Piranha Brothers, Monthy Python's Flying Circus

OK, here's the plan:

1:00-1:30 PM Wolgemut at the Lyric Stage (I may get there earlier but I'll just wander)

1:30-2:00 PM Shakespeare's Skum perform R III at Globe

2:00-2:30 PM Free Range

2:30-3:15 PM The Mediaeval Baebes at the  Jury Rig stage

3:30-4:00 PM Wolgemut at the White Hart

4:00 PM Depart for Murder Mystery at Poplar Hill Mansion

The usual disclaimers apply: my mileage may vary, I don't intend to worry overmuch if I see all of these shows, though I will try to get to all of these sites in case people are looking for me.

Since I'll be on short pay, there won't be a lot of shopping and I'll have to forgo sitting down for a reading with [info]ancientsong or a massage - maybe next year.

Those I see, I see: those I don't will be missed.

Feel free to leave a message if you'll be around and want to come along.

Trying to create a social schedule for me is a lot like building sandcastles on the beaches of the Bay of Fundy.

My day to go to the Ren Faire is getting a bit hemmed in.  I have an unknown arrival time and a hard limit for ending.

My getting the Faire will depend on a morning meeting at my UU Congregation.  I was called and told there was a meeting of the congregation leadership and asked if I was going to be there.  The congregation leadership group has me for a member?  Cue Groucho!

My departure is driven by my participation in the Usual Suspects murder mystery at Poplar Hill, where I'll reprise my role of the local police chief, Miles E. O'Brien.  We're supposed to be "on site" by 5PM.

This means the "Faire Window" will run from approx Noon to 4PM.  This should allow me to hit the primary targets (The Mediaeval Baebes and Wolgemut) and the secondary target (Shakespeare's Skum's R the 3) without a killer schedule.

I would welcome (though, based on previous attempts, certainly don't expect) anyone else interested in seeing these groups or hanging out in between.  Feel free to leave a comment.

Cue the crickets!
